Ptosis

Drooping of the eyelid can be caused by eyelid nerve damage, eyelid muscle weakness, or from swelling of the lid.

What is Ptosis?

Ptosis, or drooping of the eyelid, often occurs as a result of damage to the nerve that controls the muscles of the eyelid, problems with the eyelid muscle strength, or as a result of swelling of the lid.

Restore the positioning of the upper eyelids, lifting the margin, improving your vision, visual field and restoring symmetry to your face.

Ptosis is a very common condition in middle age, elderly patients, more common in contact lens wearers. It can become more symptomatic after cataract surgery or trauma and if not resolved spontaneously within 6 months after surgery is indicated.

Sometimes Botulinum toxin injections (‘anti-wrinkle’) in the forehead or above the eyebrow could cause or unmask a previous ptosis.

There are other rarer causes of ptosis such as 3rd nerve palsy/ paralysis, strokes, myasthenia gravis, orbital tumours involving superior orbit and levator muscle. A careful examination will raise the suspicion of such pathology and trigger further investigations.

Very rarely children are born with a droopy eyelid and this can run in families. Correction is possible and careful monitoring of vision development is needed, which is resource-intensive, hence why it is much better done in an RDUH/NHS setting.
